A Study On Guangzhou Report And City Image Of Chinese Repository From The Perspective Of "The Others"

In the 19 th century,Western countries carried out a new round of self-centered colonial expansion.For them,the Eastern countries were an uncivilized and barbaric "other" world.With the deepening of overseas missionary movement and the rise of Sino-US trade,western missionaries came to China to spread the gospel.During this period,most missionaries gathered in Guangzhou to engage in various undertakings.Chinese Repository is a comprehensive English monthly magazine founded by Western missionaries in 1832.It introduces the politics,economy and culture of China extensively,reports missionary information of foreigners in China,and evaluates the political,current affairs,social situation,urban development,imperial edicts and ministers' performances of foreigners in China.The publication of the newspaper lasted for 20 years.It was published in Guangzhou for 15 years.The newspaper has a large number of columns reported to Guangzhou,such as Walk around the city of Canton,Description of the city of Canton,Topography of Kwangtung,Course of the Pearl Riverand so on.Western missionaries introduced Guangzhou through a large number of pages,shaping the image of Guangzhou in the eyes of the world's people.This paper takes the Guangzhou report of Chinese Repository as the research object,and combs the image of Guangzhou created by China Series from the perspective of "the other".Before the "chinese rites controversy",the western countries had a good impression of Guangzhou and yearned for China.The English comprehensive monthly magazine Chinese Repository,founded by missionaries in China in the 19 th century,showed foreigners' negative attitudes towards all aspects of Guangzhou.Foreigners in China created an image of Guangzhou from the perspective of "the other".This paper focuses on the background,column setting and columns and chapters of Guangzhou's reports of Chinese Repository,I collated and classified Guangzhou's report texts.I also discussed Guangzhou's report texts from the perspective of "the other",and the strategies of Guangzhou's report from the perspective of "the other" and the causes of the relationship between Guangzhou's report and its image-building from the perspective of "the other".Describes the presentation of the image of the "other" in Guangzhou City of Chinese Repository.The report of Chinese Repository on Guangzhou and the image of Guangzhou city created by it are not objective and belong to the typical "other" report and image of Guangzhou city.The dissemination and practical significance of Guangzhou city report of Chinese Repository and its image are discussed dialectically in order to find out the method of image-building of Guangzhou from the perspective of "the other".This paper combines the image of Guangzhou City with the Chinese Repository,which was founded by foreign missionaries.Based on the reports about Guangzhou in the Chinese Repository,this paper applies the theories and knowledge of history and communication to present the image of Guangzhou in the Chinese Repository,highlighting the characteristics of interdisciplinary research and unique perspectives.Secondly,this paper re-analyses Chinese Repository from the perspective of history to provide reference for Guangzhou to explore new cross-cultural communication and learn from the past and the present.
