Yang Jian(1923-2010)is a representative editor in Hunan publishing and an expert in the compilation of ancient books in Yuelu Press.He is an outstanding editor who stuck to his posts to the end of his life.During more than 30 years of editorial career,he had participated in and witnessed the rise and development of the Xiang-Military in Publishing.The book he edited,Chuanshan Quanshu,became an important monument in the history of Hunan contemporary publishing.His editorial life reflected the brilliance and persistence of rationality.The editorial subjectivity and creativity were manifested in the interaction between local publishing and Hunan culture.The editorial concepts,ideals and spirit accumulated in long-term editorial practice all presented,which had strong guiding significance nowadays.The level of editing and the realm of working could generate direct influence in the compilation of ancient books,as well as the cultural inheritance and transmission.Yang Jian had rich experience in ancient books compilation.He attached great importance to the editorial principles and editorial styles,and drawn up the layout for the smooth publication of Chuanshan Quanshu,and carefully mobilized the internal team and external experts to work synergistically in the editing work,and built the best products for the later generations.Only diligence,prudence,and good work was the editorial tenet persevered by Yang Jian,carefully selecting the mater copy,reviewing,and repeated reading in order to seek the goodness of ancient books.The editorial practical writings produced by him,which was worth learning by later generations.The formation of editorial thoughts was related to the cultural background and editorial practice.Since took up a job as an editor in 1979,nurtured and influenced by Huxiang culture,he had formed an editorial thoughts of self-shaping,writing-shaping,and one-shaping in the practice of continuous editing work.He believed that the editorial work was based on self-shaping,which meant to shape editor himselfthrough knowledge accumulation,profound learning and practical experience,so that he was able to perform the editing work;the axis of editorial work was writing-shaping which meant to produce cultural products.The purpose of editorial work was one-shaping.By doing this,the spiritual and cultural products edited and published would be disseminated to readers so that could achieve the purpose of training,improving and shaping the readers.Under the guidance of this thought,he used to be humble and willing to help others,which formed his editorial character of humility and love,and he had also made the great contribution to the Hunan local ancient books compilation.Yang Jian left precious spiritual wealth to later generations.These editorial spirits,rooted in his rich editing experience,was in harmony with Huxiang culture and spirit.“Having sat on the cold bench for ten years,and never write any nonsense article” was the true portraiture of his work perseverance and practical spirit;what's more,the spirit of devotion just like a saying described,“making wedding dress for others” and the excellent craftsman spirit he possessed that reflected the self-improvement,humanistic pragmatism;and seeking truth from facts of Hunan publishers;which had become an important spiritual nutrition for the young editors.It always reminds the editors should do more and speak less;insist on the practice and be determined to be an excellent editor more than a general editor.These are the practical enlightenment left to Chinese editors.
