As the issue of The Image of China on the overseas mainstream media has been widely studied, the relevant research on Australian paper-based media is not sufficient. In July 2017,I served as a Chinese volunteer teacher in Confucius Institute at the University of Western Australia for one year. This thesis takes "The Image of China" in two Australian major paper-based media The Australian and The Australian Chinese Daily as the main research object, selecting October-December 2017 as the study period,in which major events such as China National Day,the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and the US President's visit to China occurred, using data analysis empirical research method, comparative research method and interdisciplinary research method.Focusing on the Chinese political, economic, and cultural reports in the newspapers,it collects the data and makes the diagrams from various dimensions such as themes, tendencies, genres, sources and so on.Meanwhile, this thesis also lays special stress on analyzing the key sample reports of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.By comparing various data, the thesis shows the characteristics and differences of Chinese image created by the two newspapers.Based on data analysis and empirical research, this paper finds out that Chinese political image, although improved in Australia, still is criticized, which reflects the narrowness and unfriendliness on agenda-setting.Australian media makes positive comments on the booming of Chinese economy and its worldwide influence. However,Chinese economic image is also currently flawed, mainly because of squeezing or threatening Australian domestic market economy and job opportunities. In contrast,Chinese cultural image is positive in Australia, mainly because Australian public generally appreciates that Chinese culture is rich in tradition and exudes colorful charm. This paper also attempts to analyze the basic factors that influence the two newspapers to shape the national image of China, including media framework, national interests, ideology and social culture.Under the multicultural society like Australia, how to build the image of China according to its policy is an opportunity as well as a challenge for both China and Australia. Therefore, this paper puts forward some specific suggestions on cross-cultural communication, media communication and multiculturalism development,in order to provide useful references for the construction and dissemination of the positive national image of China overseas in the future.
