In recent years, with the development of feminist movements around the world, the status of women has been greatly improved.Even so,we still can not deny that today's society is a "patriarchal society",that is,whether in the economic, political, military, educational or family fields, men are almost dominant. As an important force influencing historical change and social development, the male public often plays an important role in leading the direction of social development and promoting social change. In the context of the new era, understanding the image and quality of a "professional man" is of great significance to further promote the harmonious development of society.Esquire(also translated as Gentleman)magazine,as the first and most influential male fashion magazine in the world, was born in 1933 and has a history of about 86 years. The development of Chinese men's magazine market started later than that of European and American countries.Esquire, which was first published in 1996,is the copyright partner of Esquire magazine in China. As the first male fashion magazine in China,it witnessed the whole process of the development of Chinese men's fashion magazine in its 23-year development process. As a traditional medium,Esquire magazine aims to target the majority of male audiences. It provides a variety of information consultation services for male audiences. At the same time,it also imperceptibly constructs the general male public's self-perception of the ideal male image.Based on agenda-setting theory, cultivation theory and gender construction theory, this paper mainly takes the cover report of Esquire as the research sample, aiming at discussing the image of "ideal male" constructed in its cover report from two aspects of external image and internal quality. This paper assumes that Esquire magazine,as the earliest and most influential elite male fashion magazine in China, presents the male image and intrinsic quality in its cover report, which is the "ideal male" image expected and expected by people in today's patriarchal society. To a certain extent, the male image it constructs influences the audience's definition and view of a successful "fashionable man" and guides the aesthetic direction of Chinese men.Through the analysis,it is found that although the male characters presented in the cover report of Esquire are in different situations and occupations, there are some similarities in their male images: most of the men in these cover reports are successful males over 35 years old from mainland China, and most of them are "leading figures" in all walks of life, among which the actors are actors.Lord.These men tend to have strong, clean, short hair;in addition, they tend to dress neatly and prefer to wear dark suits. In addition,in terms of internal quality, the men on the cover of Esquire,Mr.Fashion, often have some "positive" personality characteristics, such as perseverance and courage, gentleness and elegance, and dare to break through and innovate.Faced with their own career, they advocate not only being down-to-earth,but also daring to innovate, and it is better to integrate personal and social ideals, which are different from traditional ones.“ In the cover report of Esquire,Mr.Fashion, there is a kind of "equal power" concept of marriage and love, which respects women's independent personality in marriage and love, and believes that today's marriage and love are free, and even many people's love is imperfect. In addition,it also praised an optimistic and indifferent attitude towards life in its cover report. It believed that life or career could not be avoided without failure, and that only by facing failure calmly could we achieve the greatest happiness.Esquire,a fashion man, constructs an image of "successful men" that meets the expectations of all parties in a patriarchal society. It will provide some thoughts and references for other media in shaping the image of men.But at the same time,we should also understand that men who grew up in a patriarchal society are also deeply bound by traditional gender concepts. They are often asked to be a "man" from an early age.Under the requirements of this concept, they often have to be responsible for supporting their families,be strong and brave, and "men do not tear lightly"...Once they have a certain traditional feminine temperament, they will immediately be labeled "Niang" as "alien" and be insulted and ridiculed by the speech of "mainstream people" in society. Therefore, this so-called "ideal male" image actually has its limitations. While constructing the self-recognition of the "ideal male" image of the ordinary male public,is it not in the restraint of strengthening the stereotype of traditional gender concept?...
