At present, due to the diversity and complexity of the research tasks, the requirements for the methodology of unconscious visual cognitive research are increasingly high.On the basis of some classical methods, scientists have developed a new method--continuous flash suppression(CFS),which has been widely applied to unconscious visual cognition research. However, previous researchers mainly applied CFS to achieve the suppression of visual stimuli, and completed the study of unconscious visual processing process, without focusing on CFS itself.Researchers do not have a systematic understanding of the CFS methodology itself, especially the spatial factors that affect the masking effect of CFS.As a result, there are great limitations in the application of CFS,and it is difficult to effectively apply CFS to experimental research. In view of the above problems, this thesis studies the field of unconscious visual cognition from the perspective of methodology. The main work includes two parts.the first part is the theoretical part, which analyzes and summarizes the background, working principle, characteristics and influencing factors of CFS;The other part is the experimental part, which studies the spatial orientation that influences the masking effect of CFS paradigm. The research is divided into two levels:(1)exploratory study:exploratory study. Two orientation(”flat"orientation and"inclined "orientation)were selected from the masking images and target images in the CFS paradigm to study whether different orientation would influence the masking effect of CFS.(2)in-depth research:in view of the problems in(1),a further study was conducted to further adjust the orientation properties of masking images and target images to verify whether they have the same properties in other(non-horizontal and vertical)cases. At the same time, the relationship between the degree of attribute difference and CFS masking effect was extended.Through the analysis of'the behavioral experimental data,we find that in the CFS paradigm, the spatial orientation of the masking stimulus and the target stimulus will have an effect on the masking effect of the CFS,and the smaller the difference of orientation between the mask and the target,CFS The stronger the suppression effect is,the opposite is also true, and the trend of the "cardinal" mask is more regular and obvious than the "oblique" mask. The discovery gives us a deeper understanding of the influence of spatial orientation in the CFS paradigm.Especially in future studies on the application of CFS paradigm in unconscious visual cognition, when orientation is involved, researchers can clearly understand the relationship between mask, target and experimental task,so that they can better control the design of mask and target to achieve the research purpose and expected experimental results. This study is of great significance to the study of unconscious visual cognition. On the one hand, the in-depth study of the attributes of CFS has important methodological significance; On the other hand,it has also promoted the research on the basic neural mechanism of the continuous scintillation inhibition paradigm,so that the "conscious" and "unconscious" conditions can be better controlled in the future unconscious visual experimental research. |
