Basically speaking, visual cognition results from the interaction betweenobjective images and cognitive subject. In addition, with the gradual development ofresearches on cognitive neuroscience and psychology, the property of integrity ofvisual cognition has become more of the hot topic of researches. Therefore, this articlewill be based on the holistic thought and associate objective images and cognitivesubjects’ psychological activities in order to make theoretical contributions to theresearch of global visual cognition.In the domain of holism and visual cognition, Gestalt psychology and topologicalperception theory are two mainstream theories. In this article, based on "physicalconnectivity" putted forward by the topological perception theory and Gestalt law, theconcept "mental connectivity" of visual imagery was proposed for the first time, andthe systematic emergence mechanism of visual imagery was tentatively explored.Based on this, this article also carried on the experimental study and presentedtheoretical explanations for visual invariance phenomena, visual cognition difficultyand the activation phenomenon of global visual imagery stimulated by local images,thereby confirming the global visual cognition based on visual imagery. The mainwork and innovation points involved the following several aspects:1. Based on the research on the relationship between perception and imagery, theproperty of visual imagery was preliminarily explored. Through the designedexperiments and some famous physiology experiments, the position and function ofvisual imagery were confirmed, and then the differences in results of visual cognitionwere investigated on the basis of visual imagery.2. Based on Gestalt psychology and the theory of topological perception, the"physical connectivity" putted forward by the topological perception theory wasapplied to the research of visual imagery which was more abstract and general thanperception. In addition,"mental connectivity" of visual imagery was proposed for thefirst time, and experiments were designed and administered to confirm its existence.3. From the perspective of the visual imagery, the brand new undertanding andinterpretation of the emergence were investigated. Furthermore, combined with the system theory of Kosslyn, the emergence mechanism of global visual imagery wasresearched, which regarded local and global imagery as the research object.4. The visual phenomena, including visual invariance phenomena, visualcognition difficulty and the activation phenomenon of global visual imagerystimulated by local images, were investigated in experiments. Moreover, theexperimental results were carried on theoretical researches and analysis, which madeuse of mental connectivity of visual imagery and the systematic emergencemechanism. Eventually, the phenomena of global visual cognition were interpreted bythe theory of visual imagery.As an important internal knowledge representation, visual imagery can play anextremely important role in the information-processing process. Therefore,stimulations of objective images and visual imagery should be combined toinvestigate global visual cognition, which not only has a strong scientific basis andphilosophical basis, but also will play an important role in perception, memory, andthe problem-solving process.
