With the development of Internet technology, network services of audio and video, network video conferencing and multimedia distance education arise at the historic moment. With the development of these new services, multicast has become an indispensable and important forwarding technology in modern networks.Bit Index Explicit Replication protocol(BIER)studied in this thesis is a solution to multicast between routers. This thesis introduces the background and research status of Bit Index Explicit Replication protocol, and gives a brief overview of BIER from architecture, control plane and data plane. After that, this thesis analyzes the link load of using BIER under different size of network. Finally, the thesis find that using BIER protocol in large-scale network causes data redundancy. For this problem,a solution aims to optimize Bit Index Explicit Replication protocol is proposed, that is,the Hierarchical Forwarding Bit Index Explicit Replication protocol(HF-BIER).Firstly,thesis analysises the forwarding idea of Hierarchical Forwarding Bit Index Explicit Replication protocol.Secondly, thesis describes HF-BIER from three aspects:architecture, control plane and forwarding plane in detail. After completing the research of the Hierarchical Forwarding Bit Index Explicit Replication protocol, this thesis simulates the new protocol from the aspects of demand analysis, outline design, detailed design and functional test. Finally, thesis carries out comparative experiment, which comparimg link load between HF-BIER and BIER and verifying optimization effect of the Hierarchical Forwarding Bit Index Explicit Replication protocol.
