Surface Plasmon Resonance(SPR)is a photoelectron phenomenon caused by the interaction of light waves with metal electrons.Fiber SPR sensor is based on the combination of fiber optic technology and surface plasmon resonance effect. This combination not only offers high sensitivity, but also has a number of advantages of the optical fiber itself, which shows a wide range of research and application prospects. In this paper, the principle and the excitation conditions of SPR are introduced firstly. The factors affecting SPR are analyzed from the point of view of optics and electromagnetics, and the structure design and working principle of the sensor are researched and discussed. Then, based on the theoretical foundation,COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software based on finite element method(FEM)was used to simulate the optical fiber SPR sensor based on the triangular pyramid structure.Next, the structure of fiber SPR refractive index sensor based on side-polished single-mode fiber, coreless fiber and tapered coreless fiber structure are introduced. The sensing characteristics of the sensor were measured and analyzed by simulation and experiment. Finally,on the basis of tapered coreless fiber SPR refractive index sensor,a sensor was fabricated for the detection of copper ions in solution by using polyacrylic acid and chitosan, and the characteristics of the sensor were examined.
