Comparative Study On Donation Of University Libraries In China And The United States

With the diversified development of economic society and the reader demands,the rising prices of literature information resources,the limited library funds can't fully meet the needs of library development.The pressure of funds will affect the quality of library service,thus affecting the users' experience.Social donation is one of the most important sources of library funds,which can help to alleviate the shortage of library funds and enrich the library collection system.Therefore,from the implementation of the library regulations of ordinary colleges and universities to the law of the public library of the People's Republic of China,China has begun to pay more and more attention to the importance of social donation to the library.However,the donation awareness of university libraries in China is still to be strengthened,and the related work is still in the initial stage.There is no deep awareness of the significance of social donation to library development.Therefore,it is necessary to study the donation of university libraries in China.Based on the donation of the top university libraries in China and the United States,this paper makes an in-depth analysis of the differences between the two,so as to draw the inspiration for the social donation of the university libraries in China.This article is divided into three parts.The first part is the theoretical discussion.The second part is the practice analysis,and the third part is the summary and the prospect.The theoretical discussion is mainly based on the study of relevant literatures at home and abroad and the current research status of donation of university libraries.Then it analyzes the relevant concepts and theories of university library donation,the significance and characteristics of Chinese and American university libraries donation,as well as the realistic opportunities and difficulties of the donation activity of university libraries in China.The practice analysis mainly focuses on the top 50 schools in China and the United States to investigate the status of donation activities of the 100 university libraries.This paper analyzes the donation channels,donation system,donation content,donation management and other four aspects of Chinese and American university libraries.On the basis of this,we can find four inspirations for the donation activities of Chinese university libraries:through the construction of thematic donation websites and various channels,we can expand the donation channels.We will improve the donation system by improving the donation regulations,making explicit system of the deposit,paying attention to the whole process and enriching the form of feedback.Through the establishment of special fund,rich donation form and establishing a Library voluntary organization to realize donation diversification;We will strengthen the management of donations by making donation plans,strengthening the publicity of donations,carrying out special posts,developing and utilizing donations,and summarizing the work experience of donations.Under the double pressures of fund shortage and rising prices of literature,university libraries should build library donation service consciousness,take library donation service as part of the future library management processes,attach great importance to the donation of service development,to improve the level of university library donation service.The third part is the summary and prospect.Due to the limitation of ability and time,there are some shortcomings in this paper,such as incomplete data of the research object and relatively shallow research on the legal policy of donation.
