With the development of globalization,English has attracted more and more attention.As a result,more English teachers are engaged in the training industry.However,for the professional development of teachers,there are few researches on the professional development of teachers in training institutions at home and abroad.As a matter of fact,teachers in English training institutions also play a significant role in education.This paper aims to study English teachers in M Institution for the improvement of their professional development,in order to achieve this goal,we need to have a comprehensive and objective understanding of English teachers' needs.Through consulting relevant materials,the author finds that more and more researches connect Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory with the needs of human beings.Therefore,the author analyzes the needs of English teachers at each level of training institutions on the basis of Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory,and reflects the problems to put forward reasonable and targeted suggestions.The research questions are following:(1)What is the current situation of English teachers' needs in training institutions from the perspective of the theory of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs?(2)What is the current situation of English teachers' professional development in training institutions?(3)How to improve English teachers' professional development in training institutions?The participants of this study are 64 English teachers from Hangzhou M Institution who are investigated through the Questionnaire Stars.On the basis ofunderstanding the needs of teachers,the author found that the needs of teachers are related to the professional development.So the author conducted the second questionnaire and interviewed 7 English teachers with different working years to discover the current situation of English teachers' professional development.In addition,a profile of author's professional development over the past 2 years in M Institution is also presented in the paper,the author puts forward some measures to improve teachers' professional development based on the interview and the profile.Conclusions of the study are drawn as follows:(1)In training institutions,the needs of physiology,safety,belonging and love,and respect have been met to a great extent,but the needs of self-realization have not been met;(2)The current level of professional knowledge of English teachers in training institutions is uneven,and their abilities in class management,parent communication,teaching design,innovation,reflection and research are insufficient.Teachers have a high degree of love for education,and their professional development is closely related to others' guidance,resources,time and their internal drive,and etc;(3)To develop the professional ability of English teachers,training institutions are supposed to set clear and definite career planning,pay attention to teachers' psychological cultivation and strengthen the training and learning for novice teachers.Although there are still some limitations in the implementation of this study,which needs further improvement,it is strongly believed by the author that the study provides some directions to help educational institutions in terms of teachers' professional development. |
