A Study On The Publication Of The Commercial Press "University Series"(1932-1949)

Since the establishment of the Commercial Press in 1897,it has been dedicated to promoting the academic independence and academic self-improvement of our country,especially for the practice of modern education in China,and has made great efforts to inspire the wisdom of the people and save the country.With the continuous improvement of basic education in modern times and the rise of higher education,the commercial press has transferred the strategic object of publishing textbooks to universities.This is not only the first attempt of the Commercial Press to publish the university textbooks systematically,but also ushered in the prosperity of the university textbooks in the field of modern higher education in China.By carefully exploring the practice of compiling and publishing University Books in Commercial Printing Library,and analyzing its far-reaching influence in history,as well as the existing problems and limitations,we can provide some previous experiences and lessons for the compilation and publication of university teaching materials.This paper mainly includes the following four parts:The first part analyzes the reasons for the emergence of the University Series from the development environment of modern education and the publishing situation of the commercial printing house itself.First of all,the Commercial Press started the "University Series" first thing is to set up the "University Series" Committee;then,in the absence of a complete list of university subjects in the academic community,the Commercial Press organized the whole library with a multi-party survey,and,with the efforts of the Series Committee,prepared the first complete list of university subjects in our country;secondly,in the collection of manuscripts,the Commercial Press actively contacted and signed a contract with various academic groups to encourage the members of the series committee to actively solicit contributions from the community experts,and to make a large introduction to the publication of more than three series of "University Series ".The second part focuses on the main practical activities of the compilation and publication of the University Series,the general publishing process and the use of the books,in order to show the general situation of the printing and publishing process of the series.First of all,in the face of the fact that the academic circles do not yet have a complete university subject list,the commercial printing library organizes the investigation and solicitation of the whole library,and compiles the first more complete university subject list in our country.Secondly,in the aspect of soliciting manuscripts,the Commercial Press has actively contacted and signed contracts with various academic organizations to encourage the members of the Series Committee to actively collect manuscripts from social experts,thus achieving the huge scale of more than 300 series of teaching materials in the University Series.Finally,by introducing the general situation of the publication of the University Series from 1932 to 1949,and showing the general use of the series,people can have a more comprehensive understanding of the series.The third part is a historical reflection on the positive influence and shortcomings of the printing and publishing activities of the University Series of Commercial Press.On the one hand,the University Series has effectively promoted the development and academic independence of modern academic undertakings in China,provided a number of systematic and perfect high-quality teaching materials for the field of modern higher education in China,promoted the diversification of teaching materials,created a new way of publishing university teaching materials,and led to the atmosphere of peer publishing of university teaching materials.On the other hand,the series also exposed some problems,such as limited to famous professors when soliciting manuscripts,and the examination of manuscripts was not rigorous and standardized enough.The fourth part mainly aims at the historical reflection of "university series" to provide some experience enlightenment for the construction of college teaching materials today.The author puts forward some reasonable suggestions from three aspects: the creation of "fine teaching materials" project,the encouragement of famous compilation,the encouragement of famous compilation and the examination of standardized teaching materials.
