The talent training model represented by the Honors College of Michigan State University aims to cultivate elite talents with innovative thinking and academic ability.The history of the honors college can be traced back to the founder of American Honors Education who did the honors education reform experiment in Swarthmore College during the period of 1921-1940.Subsequently,the honors college's top-notch innovative talent training model was implemented in public universities to provide a path for the country to train top-notch innovative talents,to provide methods for universities to improve the quality of undergraduate education,and to provide possible channels for gifted students to develop their individuality.In the implementation process of the talent training model represented by the top-notch innovative talent training model of the Honors College of Michigan State University,it always refers to the "scientific" talent training theory,adheres to the "elite" talent cultivation core,and follows the "people-oriented" talent training mode,and uses “diversified” talent training methods,which has led the new direction of the development of top-notch innovative talents in universities.As an honors college with a long history and rich school-running experience,the innovative talent training model of Honors College of Michigan State University has the most representative and rich value.First of all,the Honors College of Michigan State University guarantees the challenge and quality of top-notch innovative talents through the highly difficult curriculum of comprehensive research courses,honor courses,and postgraduate courses.At the same time,the Honors College highlights the flexibility of teaching methods through the "independent + cooperative" inter-university joint training,"free + theme" Seminar,"distributed + periodic" self-study and other teaching and learning methods,so as to respect the independent development and individuality of honors students.In addition,the opening of the honors community,the opening of various honors student organizations,and the development of honors student overseas study programs also have provided perfect learning support services for honors students to draw on the strength of their peer groups,develop a global vision,and achieve their own comprehensive development.However,the talent training model represented by the Michigan State University has caused a lot of controversy,such as whether the talent training model can be evaluated,whether the talent training model does harm to the educational equity,whether the talent training model destories the stability of the educational ecology.Therefore,while absorbing and extracting the advantages of the top-notch innovative talent training model of the American Honors College,we should also comprehensively and objectively recognize that the top-notch innovative talent training model of the American Honors College is not perfect.This model still has the above-mentioned problems to be further studied by scholars and the public.The emergence and development of the top-notch innovative talent training model of the American Honors College has an inevitable impact on American higher education and global higher education.The training model of honors colleges for cultivating elite talents retains the spirit of liberalization of higher education and reshapes the intrinsic character of the university,which is conducive to the university to take care of the humanity in the process of talent cultivation,to trace the elite concept,and to eliminate the utilitarian wind.At the same time,the model clarifies the boundaries of deep knowledge,opens up the way of deep knowledge production and dissemination,and protects the highest ideals of the university with deep knowledge.It has played a positive role in the promotion,production,dissemination and inquiry of advanced knowledge.In addition,this model helps to reconcile the contradiction between mass education and elite education and respect the diversity of higher education structure.It is positively helpful in clarifying the problem of dislocation of mass education and elite education,reconciling social needs and the inherent development logic of higher education,and promoting the reform of talent training methods.It has injected impetus to improve the differentiation of functions of higher education,to refine the service orientation of higher education,to respect the diversification of functions and implementation methods of higher education.
