Since great importance have been attached to education in China,exam-oriented education can no longer meet the needs of the development,instead,quality education is replaced by.Quality education must aim at all students so that every student can be developed and improved.However,a lot of students are suffering from difficulties due to various reasons during practical teaching procedures.So it is of great significance for the implementation of quality education to analyze the causes of formation and transformation for underachieving students.This thesis investigate the causes of underachieving students in chemistry by questionnaire which based on literature retrieval and teaching practice in rural middle school.There are many reasons for the cause,such as interest,motivation,learning habit,teachers,family and so on.According to the investigation of the questionnaire,the author has formulated the transformation strategy and applied it to the whole class teaching and the case study for underachieving students in chemistry.In practical teaching,group experiments are carried out in experimental classes to stimulate students’ interest in Chemistry.Chemistry competitions are held to enhance students’ learning motivation;cooperative study in group is carried out to mobilize the learning initiative of students and to cultivate students to develop good learning habits.Teacher should pay more attention to encourage students and communicate with students’ parents through parents’ meetings and chart groups on social media to stimulate students’ confidence in Chemistry learning.In case study,four underachieving students in chemistry with different causes were improved through regular dialogue,communication with parents and individual tutoring.The average score of the experimental class is significantly different from that of the control class through one semester of practical teaching transformation.The scores of the four underachieving students in chemistry in the case study have gradually reached the average level of their class.It shows that chemical teachers can effectively transform underachieving students in chemistry through various methods,such as carrying out chemical experiments in groups,organizing chemical knowledge contests,communicating with students’ parents,caring more about their study and life,and giving more encouragement.
