International Charter on Geographical Education indicates that “geography education is necessary to cultivate the active and responsible citizens in current days and future world.” Since the new curriculum reform of geography in 2001,cultivating the geography quality of students is one of important tasks in basic education.Until now,the basic education has already formed a series of teaching methods to cultivate the necessary geography quality for citizens in the future,including the comprehensive analysis method,comparative method and geographic map.Among which,geographic map is the deepest and the most extensive method.As the important carrier of geographic information,geographic map has the audio-visual image,becomes concise,and carries large amount of information by comparing with characters.Using geographic map for teaching is contributed to cultivating imagination,logical thinking capability,information acquisition and integration capacity,and geographic problem-solving ability of students.Moreover,it not only can stimulate visual sense organ of students and depends on visual psychology to gain map information,but also can cultivate geographic skill quality of students.It is one of important approaches for students to gain geographic map information.With the geographic map reading capacity of middle school students based on visual psychology,the author in this thesis aims to use the literature method to look for and read lots of literatures,summarizes and explains relevant contents and applicable theories,and concludes categories and features of geographic map,By combining Grade Seven geography textbook map with practical application of middle school students for the geography textbook in current stage,the author analyzes and uses the influences of visual psychology on the geographical map teaching,and provides references for geographical teaching in middle schools and students’ map analysis capability.The research progress is stated as follows:(1)By analyzing relevant literatures,it can be found that students have insufficient learning interest in geographic map of the basic education and students have the weak map reading and using skills,because teachers may pay fewer attentions to cultivation of geographic map capacity.Moreover,the teaching method is insufficiently scientific.Teachers fail to take full advantage of students’ sensory stimulation and fail to mobilize visual psychology function to improve students’ map-reading effect.(2)The existing geographic classroom is based on map structure features,manifestation and application features to divide the geographic map into the geographic landscape map,geographic schematic map,geographic distribution map and geographic statistical map for teaching,so as to take full advantage of perception and improve classroom effectiveness.In order to embody student-oriented educational teaching thoughts,the author reclassifies the geographic map based on visual psychology of students,divides the geographic map in Seventh Grade Geography Textbook of Hunan Education into the geographic landscape map,geographic distribution map,geographic isoline map and geographic arrowhead map,and provides references for teachers to scientifically use the geographic map in the teaching process.(3)The study on students’ questionnaire survey and teachers’ interview finds that in terms of learning interest,54.77% of students have the general interest in the geographic map in the textbook.As for use habit of the geographic map,72.30% of students firstly notice the map contents.With regards to the teachers’ application mode for the geographic map,52.40% of students hope that teachers can process the geographic map and stand out relevant geographic elements or increase the exercise effect.The survey finds that students have the insufficient interest in studying the geographic map.They are lack of the basic capacity and habit to red and use the map.Moreover,they are lack of ability to reveal the geographic map.The teachers’ interview indicates that teachers have insufficient training for students’ map-reading capacity.Teachers have defects as selecting the mode of geographic map and they have the insufficient capacity to use photoshop.Moreover,they are lack of the consciousness to guide students to perfect the psychological map.Under the circumstance,it is essential for teachers to pay attention to student analysis,make the best of students’ visual psychology,guide students to form the good habit to read and use the map,cultivate students’ strong learning interest,improve their learning autonomy and initiative,and enhance the teaching effect in the geographic classroom.(4)The empirical research results indicate that the geographic map teaching based on visual psychology can develop students’ interest in the geographic map and improve their learning performance.The improvement amplitude of students’ geographic map reading capacity based on visual psychology is related to knowledge level of students.In other words,high score section is slightly improved,while low score section is highly improved,especially for the most obvious improvement on students who have poor performance.Teachers should refer to categories of the geographic map to develop the geographic map teaching based on the visual psychology.As reading and using the map,it is necessary to use the maps as many as possible,stand out the emphasis,realize association of activity and inertia and reveal it in good time.(5)Through the study,it can be found that the geographic map teaching based on visual psychology of junior middle school students can stimulate students’ sensor organ and arouse students’ interest in reading the map.Teachers should pay attentions to different presentation modes and perception of carriers for different information.By virtue of the correct map-reading method,training students to gain the capacity to gain the geographic map information can promote the development students’ geographic spatial capacity development.Besides,teachers should use multimedia technology to reinforce the visual stimulation of geographic map content.The context mode can be used to cultivate the positive participative psychology of students and enable them to form the map-reading consciousness.The geographic map teaching based on visual psychology can promote construction of students’ psychology map,thus students will gain the abundant geographic knowledge through visual perception.
