| The acceptance,recognition,appreciation,and companion of peers are a significant part of the joy of human life.Many people experience stress owing to the desire to gain acceptance from their peers and tend to act against their will in order to avoid exclusion and discrimination.Most of the disabled,since antiquity,have been socially excluded and are usually viewed as a disparate group.Today,due to the rising proportion of disabled children and society’s higher demand for equity and fairness,handicap children are becoming increasingly visible in the public eye,resulting in a growing variety of activities to safeguard their rights.As a crucial stage for individual growth,experiences from childhood to a large extent shape a person’s attitude towards other people and things.personal beliefs and the way he or she thinks.In the process of child development.peer acceptance,which promotes socialization,is essential for children’s mental health.The most important step of socialization development is social inclusion.which cannot happen without a friendly environment and peer acceptance.Nonetheless,lacking positive recognition and emotions for their handicap peers,able-bodied children are inclined to discriminate and reject disabled children-that is how a peer environment that excludes handicap children is formed.Utilizing the service method of group work and guided by cognitive behavior and social learning theories,the study in this paper aims to help able-bodied children develop unbiased opinions and recognition for their handicap peers so as to improve their willingness to accept those peers,in hopes of attracting more attention of the community and the school to disabled children.During group services,needs assessment of peer acceptance of both able-bodied and handicap children is assessed and group action plans are created to intervene through concrete activities from the dimension of cognition and emotion.Then,service methods are improved based on suggestions of group members and service center staff.Finally,the effects of the intervention are evaluated according to the feedback from group members and service center staff,deficiencies in the services of social workers are analyzed and suggestions are presented for future practice and research in the field.Research suggests that intervention services through group work can assist Able-bodied Children to change their negative perception of Handicap Peers,to generate feelings of respect and love,ultimately,the act of acceptance is formed. |
