In recent years, with the increasing academic pressure of junior high school students, the disadvantages of the education evaluation system that takes score as the main evaluation standard become more and more prominent. Therefore, the mental health problems of junior high school students caused by excessive attention to academic performance should be paid attention to by all parties.According to the 2018 China education development report, academic pressure has become the leading cause of suicide among primary and middle school students, and the number of suicides among middle school students is 4.7 times that of primary school students. Therefore, understanding the impact of academic performance on the mental health of junior high school students is crucial to maintain the healthy growth of junior high school students. At present, most academic studies on academic performance focus on the influencing factors of academic performance, while there are few related studies on the impact of academic performance on mental health.Studies have shown that self-esteem is closely related to mental health, and some scholars regard self-esteem as the core of mental health. Therefore, the study on the relationship between academic performance and self-esteem is helpful to understand the impact of academic performance on students' mental health. In the studies related to academic performance and self-esteem,most studies show that self-esteem has an impact on academic performance, but some studies also show that academic performance may affect self-esteem.There is no consensus on the relationship between academic performance and self-esteem,so it is necessary to further explore this issue. The physical and mental health growth of junior high school students needs social support provided by others, and social support is closely related to academic performance and self-esteem.Therefore,the discussion on social support is helpful to understand the process and mechanism of the impact of academicperformance on students' mental health.Based on the existing studies, this study finds that social support has the conditions to act as an intermediary between academic performance and self-esteem,but there is a lack of validation studies on the mediating effect of social support. Therefore, from the perspective of maintaining the mental health of junior high school students, this study investigated the relationship between academic performance and self-esteem,and further analyzed the mediating effect of social support. This study adopts the method of questionnaire survey in liaoning, henan, sichuan, shandong and other places to issue 1084 effective questionnaires were six junior high school, using SPSS,the PROCESS,AMOS software to analyze data processing, the results showed that:(1)there were statistically significant differences in the social support of junior high school students at different levels of academic performance. The higher the academic performance, the higher the social support, the lower the academic performance and the lower the social support.(2)there were statistically significant differences in the self-esteem of junior middle school students at different levels of social support. The self-esteem level increased with the increase of social support level and decreased with the decrease of social support level.(3)for junior high school students, social support plays an important mediating role in the impact of academic performance on self-esteem.Social support dimensions play an important mediating role in the impact of academic performance on self-esteem.(4)the self-esteem level of middle school students can better predict the level of academic performance, the higher the self-esteem of students, the better the academic performance;(5)academic performance affects self-esteem through social support, and self-esteem also affects academic performance, forming a closed cycle. This study found that junior high school students tend to obtain more social support from the people around them by improving their academic performance, and the higher social support provided by the people around them is conducive to the development of students' self-esteem,which in turn promotes their efforts to improve their academic performance. This finding has some implications for maintaining the mental health of junior high school students and promoting their long-term development. Finally, this paper discusses some deficiencies in the research process, and puts forward some prospects for the future research.
