The students turned out in Junior Normal College are the future teachers who are regarded as the main force in the fundamental education and their situation of mental health is closely relative with the national education. Applying the survey method, present paper intended to investigate the mental health situation of the students in Junior Normal College and to explore the influence mechanism of social support and self-esteem on mental health. Questions we mainly focused are followings: (1) general situation of Junior Normal College students and the main problems; (2) the current level of social support and self-esteem in Junior Normal College students; (3) the relationships among the social support, self-esteem and mental health and their predictive effect on mental health; and (4) the mediating effect of self-esteem on the relation between social support and mental health. The results are displayed as following:(1) The level of Junior Normal College students on mental health significantly lower than the national norm. Obsession and depression are the most two syndromes followed by ammonia, anxiety and interpersonal sensitivity.(2) Both social support and self-esteem are closely relative with the level of student's mental health. The objective support referred to as the feeling experience of being supported, respected and understood, and the extent which the individual apply and accept social support are effective predictors for the mental health.(3) The level of self-esteem serves as a mediator on the relationship between the social support and mental health. The fully mediating effect of self-esteem was found on the relation between the degree of the usage of social support and mental health, partial mediating effect was found as well on the relationship between objective support and mental health. Therefore, objective support can influence the degree of mental health both immediately and indirectly, and the way of the support usage degree influencing mental health was only indirect by influencing individual self-esteem.
