Harvard University was the first university that established the Ed.D program.And Harvard University always developed itself during the process of the Ed.D's development to make this program creative.The outstanding characters of the Ed.D program in Harvard University reflected the main stream of the characters of US Ed.D programs to some extent.In order to meet the academic need of society,Harvard University responded to the development of professional doctorate and combined its own developing goals to establish the Ed.D program.Therefore,this study chooses Harvard University as a representative and does research on the changes of Ed.D's cultivation model in different periods.At the same time,this study analyzes the distinct characters of the Ed.D in three periods.Based on the Ed.D's historical characters and trends of the changes in three periods,the development tracks and dynamic cause can be fully found.In that case,we can have a general knowledge of Ed.D's cultivation model in Harvard University.Besides that,it is good for us to master the reforming direction by analyzing the characters and dynamic causes of Ed.D.Therefore,Chinese universities will have a general knowledge about Ed.D and develop more suitable policies to develop Ed.D in China..First of all,this study analyzes the origin and development of Ed.D in America and pays much attention to the contribution of Harvard University.We can fully understand the main cause of the American professional doctorate's appearance by analyzing the origin of American professional doctorates.There are three main reasons: 1.the spread of Professional Movement influence;2.the challenges that Ph.D is facing;3.the transformation of American society.And Ed.D forms its own evaluating system,authentication mode and reforming methods from the original period to the developing period.Secondly,this study analyzes the origin and development of professional doctorate and studies the changes of Harvard University's cultivating modes of Ed.D in three periods under the great historical background.Therefore,we can discover the specific background,characters of cultivating modes and developing challenges of Ed.D in the three periods.So this study concludes the developing dynamic causes andchanging characters of Ed.D in Harvard University.And also this study provides some new ideas for Chinese universities to develop Ed.D.This study analyzes the characters of Ed.D in Harvard University from five aspects: 1.Cultivation aims;2.Course settings;3.Teaching organization and arrangement;4.Relationship between teachers and students;5.Internal quality guarantee.And then this study provides some new advice based on the troubles and challenges that Chines universities are facing.We should clearly tell the difference between Ed.D and Ph.D and understand the cultivation aims.Only we do like that can Chinese universities catch the autonomous right,stick to the aim of professional doctorates and cultivate the diversity of Ed.D program.Finally,the creativity of this study includes three points:1.Choosing Harvard University as a breakthrough by using the case study.Under the comparative method,this study longitudinally compares the different characters of Ed.D in three periods and discovers the advantages and disadvantages.And at the same time this study also makes a lateral comparison between US Ed.D and Chinese Ed.D.This study analyzes the cultivating modes of Chinese Ed.D under the Chinese background and wants to learn more experience from US Ed.D to develop Ed.D in Chinese universities.2.Making a conclusion of the characters of Harvard Ed.D in three periods.That is—the first period Ed.D(philosophy doctors and courses),the second period Ed.D(combined courses and professional practice)and the second period Ed.D(practicality and professionalism).3.Cultivating the dynamic causes and general characters of Ed.D,which include: the push of American government's policy,the transformation of knowledge production,the development need of Ed.D and self-searching of universities.According to the dynamic causes the studies also discovers that three characters of Ed.D in Harvard University,that is the combination of “breaking” and“establishing”,personal developing and sticking to practice.
