The study of population semi-urbanization rate is an important part of population urbanization rate,as well as the inevitable requirement of the development of new-type urbanization in China. The principal contradiction facing Chinese society has evolved into the contradiction between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people's ever-growing needs for a better life.Currently, urbanization develops fast in China, however, the household registration issue has not been resolved in a timely manner, which led to the issue of semi-urbanization,as well as the poor quality of urbanization.Large amount of rural population migrated to urban areas cannot enjoy the welfare of urban residents. This paper analyzes the characteristics of frequency and distribution as well as the driving factors of population semi urbanization rate. The aim is gaining a deepen understanding of the semi-urbanization issue of Chinese population, and providing proofs for reducing semi-urbanization rate as well as leading to healthy development of new-type urbanization. With geonomics, population geography and urban geography as the guidance,This paper analyzes the characteristics of frequency and distribution as well as the driving factors of population semi-urbanization rate.On the basis of providing the evolution model of semi-urbanization rate, this paper makes an conclusion on the stage characteristics of population semi-urbanization rate between 1982 and 2017,analyzes the permanent resident population's urbanization rate, urbanization and semi-urbanization rates of registered population among different provinces, geographical and economic regions of China in the year of 2014.This paper discusses spatial and temporal disparities of population semi-urbanization rates among different provinces between 2005 and 2014,analyzes the driving factors of semi-urbanization rates with spatial econometric model. This paper gets the following important conclusions through analysis.(1)Since 1982,the semi-urbanization rate of Chinese population experienced slow increased(1982-1995)and fast increase(1995-2014).In 2017,the population semi-urbanization rate showed downward trend.(2)On the basis of the analysis on the population urbanization rates of different provinces and regions in 2014,we could conclude that urbanization rate of registered population is obviously lower than permanent resident population. Moreover, regional disparity on semi-urbanization rate is obvious. This means that the high semi-urbanization rate leads to high urbanization rate of permanent resident population.(3)Semi-urbanizationrate of most of the provinces and regions of China between 2005 and 2014 increased a lot.The number of provinces and cities with highly semi-urbanization rate increased obviously.Semi-urbanization rate of eastern region was higher than western region. The provinces and cities with high semi-urbanization rates had the trend of spreading to neighboring regions.(4)Economic factors are the most important reason for promoting the development of semi-urbanization.In the end, this paper raised the research trends of semi-urbanization in the future on the basis of quantitative and qualitative analysis.
