As an important part of the International Olympic Games, the Winter Olympic Games(also known as Winter Olympics)often called “Visual Feast About Ice and Snow” is the highest global tournament among all the winter games. As many Chinese skaters and skiers have worked hard for winning medals and broken the performance records frequently,Beijing and Zhangjiakou succeeded in the bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, sports(especially winter sports)in China has drawn much more attentions from the world. As a powerful Chinese English newspaper,China Daily's news has been reprinted by foreign media regularly.News articles about the Winter Olympic Games on China Daily are conducive to the popularization of the winter sports as well as the propaganda of the Olympic culture.Besides, many countries can observe and understand China comprehensively through these news reports.Based on the media frame theory, the thesis has focused on the news reports of four Winter Olympics from the year 2002 to 2014.Additionally,these news articles have been inspected from the frames of theme, structure and discourse by using the method of content analysis. The aim of the paper is to summarize the characteristics of news frame as well as the discourse construction of Winter Olympic news reports on China Daily. Finally, some problems in the reporting of Olympic Games are found out and some relevant suggestions are offered. The thesis suggests that the thematic framework of Winter Olympic news reports on China Daily is one-sided and local-oriented.The structural framework of the reports mainly focused on the evaluating-analyzing structure. In terms of the discourse framework of the reports, the framework of medal-prioritized is weakened, which because the reports pay more attention to “people” not to“medals”.Thus,China Daily should follow the suggestions as followed to improve its reporting skills: firstly, the government need have an active intervention on reports and relevant departments at a higher level need have an effective support to the news reports;secondly, make a good use of agenda-setting function to broaden the fields of news reporting on the Winter Olympics;thirdly, attach more importance to editorials and set up an communicating idea of "overall-sports";Finally,construct a globalized concept for reporting the Winter Olympics.
