The current society is the age of knowledge economy,and it is also an era of lifelong learning.It is also an era when network information is developed.The ability to collect and process information in complex information is very important;reading is the basis of all learning,so it is especially important for students to develop good reading habits and mastering basic reading methods.The "Further Reading" column outside the text of the Biology Textbook for the Compulsory Education Stage of the People's Education Press is a supplement to the text of the textbook and also a deepening and extension of basic knowledge.The rational application of "Further Reading" in teaching can broaden the students' knowledge and train students' good reading habits,thus lay a solid foundation for students to adapt to the information society and lifelong development.In order to better apply the "Further Reading" column,the author summed up the current status of research at home and abroad.By doing questionnaires among students and interviews with teachers,the author understood the current status of the "Further Reading" columns.It is found that the "Further Reading" column teaching have problems such as teachers' ambiguous positioning of columns,teachers' attitudes influencing students' learning of columns,lack of attractiveness of some columns,students' lack of good reading habits,and teachers' single use of columns.Aiming at the status quo problems,the author proposed measures to improve the status quo,such as strengthening theoretical studies,clarifying the positioning of columns;teachers' guidance on column learning;enriching the columns' information,enhancing attraction;cultivating students' good reading habits,improving reading ability;integrating teaching design and column learning,and flexible use,etc..The author also put forward three teaching methods: creating teaching situations,conducting extracurricular self-study,and developing extracurricular practical activities.The author selected the students of the 1 class Grade 8 of the research school as the research object,and carried out the practical research of teaching the "Further Reading" columns.Through practical research,it has been found that the strategy proposed for the current status issue is feasible and basically improves the application of the “Further Reading” columns in the teaching class.The three teaching methods proposed are applicable to the teaching of “Further Reading” column in Biology textbooks for the compulsory education of the People's Education Press.The application of “Further Reading” columns in teaching is beneficial to teachers and students.It can promote the improvement of students' interest in learning.It is also helpful for cultivating students' career awareness,and has initially cultivated students' good reading habits.It is also beneficial to the improvement of teachers' teaching ability.
