Why do college students choose to join government department?Perry James has argued that the individuals with a high degree of public service motivation tend to seek membership in a public agency.Do the college students who choose government department as a career intention is based on strong public service motivation or other considerations?This study takes the masters in Xiamen University as a sample,takes public service motivation and career value as independent variable,and uses the career intention of masters in Xiamen University as the dependent variable.Combined with the empirical analysis results,the relevance between the public service motivation and the choice of the government department as career intention is discussed.The paper divides into five parts:The first part is the introduction.It introduce the background of this study,and the literature of public service motivation,the relevance between public service motivation and career intention,the relevance between work value and career intention are reviewed and summarized comprehensively.The second part is the theory that guides the subject of this research:Person-Organization Fit and Hierarchy of Needs.The third part is the introduction of research design,sample,variable measurement,and research hypothesis and questionnaire structure.The fourth part is the empirical analysis.It explored the PSM level,work value of masters in Xiamen University and the relevance between their PSM,work value and the career intention to join the government sector.The fifth part is the conclusion and the suggestion.This study shows that the public service motivation of masters in Xiamen University who wish to join the government department have no effect on their choice of government departments as career intention,and the major,family background and the value of job security are expected to be predictors which can explain why college students choose to join government departments.The masters who appreciate the income and promotion opportunities are more like to choose the private sector rather than the government department.Based on the empirical analysis of this study,it is suggested that the government departments should optimize the employee selection mechanism,the university should strengthen the employment guidance and the college students and their parents should establish rational professional values. |
