This paper is an English translation report of A Study on the Relationship between Zhuang and Thai's Traditional Cultures.The C-E translation is an excerpt,which is the second chapter of the sixteenth part from the fifth volume of A Comparative Study on Zhuang and Thai Nationalities' Traditional Cultures.The monograph was jointly completed by scholars from the Guangxi Institute of Ethnic Studies and Silpakorn University.It is a series of books that introduce in detail the excellent traditional cultural achievements of the Zhuang and Thai nationalities from15 aspects,such as geographical environment,archaeology,language,and production habits.The part that the translator has chosen is mainly about the conclusion and study of the relationship between Thai and Zhuang nationalities.It focuses on the analysis and comparison of various viewpoints on the origin of the Zhuang and Thai nationalities and the differences and similarities of the relationship between the traditional cultures of the Zhuang and Thai nationalities.Besides,it probes into the similarities and differences of the geographical environment,physique features,prehistoric cultures,abstract cultures,and concrete cultures respectively.In the process of translation,the translator applies Jef Verschueren's Adaptation Theory,translation methodologies of ethnic cultural classics,and relevant theoretical knowledge of linguistics to guide her translation.The four dimensions of Adaptation Theory fit well with linguistic,social,cultural and cognitive factors in the process of language use.This report intends to analyze words,sentences,and discourses of the original text from three dimensions: contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,and dynamics of adaptability.On the premise of faithfulness to the original semantics,the translator adopts flexible and diverse translation methods,such as literal translation,literal translation plus annotation,free translation,division,combination,and conversion,etc.Effects have been done in order to make the translation better adapt to the English readers' social and cultural context,language-using habits and cognitive level so that more English readers can understand the relationship and development process of the Zhuang and Thai nationalities.
