This paper is on how to achieve audiences? understanding, acceptance and appreciation on the basis of being faithful to the source text in lexical meaning, contextual facts, tone and style under the guidance of linguistic adaptation theory, with the Chinese translation of Jennie Gerhardt(excerpts)as the corpus. And the analysis under the view of a translator is on how to reproduce the writing style of the source text in the target language,on the contextual expression of lexical meaning and the resolution of cultural gaps. From this translation task, that is embodied as 1)how to naturally express the writing style of the source text in the target language in order to achieve the understanding and acceptance of the audiences;2)the contextual expression of lexical meaning lies in the faithfulness to the source text and the appropriate choice of words in the target language;3)in cultural gaps, what needs to pay attention to is the transmission of cultural connotation in order to realize the transmission of information instead of literal meaning,i.e.,the realization of dynamic equivalence. This paper will reveal the practical guidance of linguistic adaptation theory for the translation of English classic novels of literature with the Chinese translation of Jennie Gerhardt(excerpts)as a case study in linguistic, communicative and cultural dimensions.Besides, practical methods and skills are concluded from the case study to search relevant information and to resolve translation difficulties of this translation task and. Those methods and skills are proved to be effective and available.Although the cases are analyzed in three dimensions respectively, the three dimensions interweave with each other in the process of this translation practice.During this translation task, the dimensions which the translators need to take into consideration in order to adapt to “translation eco-environment” are more varied and complicated. The more dimensions a translator takes into account, the better “the integrated selective adaption” of translation is and the more faithful the translation is to the original text.
