A Report On C-E Translation Of A Comparative Study On Zhuang And Thai Nationalities' Traditional Literatures And Arts(Excerpts)

The report is based on the C-E translation of A Comparative Study on Zhuang and Thai Nationalities' Traditional Cultures(excerpts).The monograph,including five volumes,was co-authored by Qin Shengmin and scholars from Guangxi Institute of Ethnic Culture and Silpakorn University and published in 2003.It introduces the traditional cultures of Zhuang and Thai Nationalities from 15 aspects,such as geographical environment,archaeology,language and production habits.It also conducts a comparative research between the two nationalities.The source text of the translation is selected from the third chapter of the thirteenth part,which is mainly about a comparative study on the two nationalities' s traditional literatures and arts.In the process of translation,the translator used Nida's functional equivalence theory as well as some translation methodologies of ethnic cultural classics to guide the translation practice.This report first gives an brief introduction to the translation task;then introduces the preparation before the translation,including an analysis of the source text,translation tools and the theoretical guidance;next,the translator selects specific cases in the translation project to analyze the translation from three aspects: lexical,syntactical and textual translation.Finally,the report summarizes gains and limitations of the translation practice.The translator has come to realize that when translating ethnic cultural classics,it is essential to supplement necessary information omitted in the original texts and explore the hidden the cultural meaning behind the texts so as to create high-quality translations.
