Translation Of Metaphors In Political Discourse Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

General Secretary Xi Jinping has been reading extensively and always quoting classics in his speeches or works for many years He has used many metaphors that are close to the people’s lives based on their physical and cultural experience,to emphasize unique national ethos and the philosophy of the leader’s rule of the country.Which formed his unique personalized language style with rich language charm.Xi Jinping: The Governance of China was compiled jointly by the State Council Information Office,the Party Literature Research Office and the China International Publishing Group.The book propagandizes the ideology of the Communist Party of China and explains the policies and guidelines of Chinese leaders in governing the country.It is an important window for the international community to get to know contemporary China and a key to finding Chinese issues.Politics cannot be separated from language.A large number of metaphors are used in political discourse,in other words,political metaphors are ubiquitous in political discourse.These metaphors not only involve mapping between different concepts and implied meaning,but also can achieve the communicative function of persuading the audience to cooperate patiently in different social and cultural backgrounds,which contain rich ideology.Political texts have special characteristics because of their language and function.Cultural factors and audience psychology should be taken into account,and connect the two languages so that the target audience can react with the original audience and achieve the purpose of effective information dissemination and cultural exchange.While the study on the metaphor translation in political discourse remains a blind spot for Chinese researchers,thus providing a research direction for the author.The English Version of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China used many metaphors that are close to the people’s lives,which made a better understanding of Chinese cultural connotations and its way of governing the country for readers.Therefore the source texts and target texts of the book are excellent corpus for cross-cultural comparative study of metaphors.This thesis adopts 79 speeches in the English version of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China as the corpus,recognizes 12 types of conceptual metaphors from the discourse by the Metaphor Identification Procedure(MIPVU)developed by Pragglej Group,under the guidance of the translation Skopos Theory put forward by German Functionalist School and analyses 12 metaphor types in the book by introducing the cultural dimension,with a view to gaining insight into the recognition of political metaphors in different cultural contexts and studying the cross-cultural translation strategies of political metaphors so as to spread Chinese thoughts to the world and share what China has achieved.
