| Metaphor is a widely used rhetorical device in daily communications of all sorts of languages. But metaphor also involves cognition. In a certain cultural background, metaphors usually carry a unique way of thinking and cultural connotation, making the translation of metaphor a complicated intercultural communication. Recently, the translation of metaphor has been a hot topic for researchers. Many studies have put forward some translation methods or strategies from perspectives of intercultural communication, the subjectivity of translators or cognitive linguistics, etc. Meanwhile, studies on Functional Skopos theory have also shed light on the translation of many types of texts. The Skopos theory provides an insight into the nature of translation as a purposeful activity, which can be a new perspective to the study of metaphor translation. As a project report, this thesis mainly consists of two parts:a contrastive discourse between English and Chinese and a commentary on the English and Chinese translation. The first part consists of the English-Chinese translation of A Tour through Eastern Counties of England. The second part is a commentary divided into four chapters. The first chapter initially presents a review on studies on metaphor translation and the development and application of Skopos Theory. The second chapter explains thoroughly the definition and features of metaphor, including the influence of cultural factors on metaphor translation. Chapter Three takes the translation purpose and cultural factors into account, proposes several translation methods for metaphor translation of the two categories introduced above. Chapter Four winds up above analysis and states that from the perspective of Skopos theory, translators shall adopt translation methods according to the translation purpose of the metaphors and also take cultural factors into account, flexibly adopting translation methods. |
