This paper takes the Chinese translation of The Amazing Things Around Us as an example to explore the application of communicative translation theory in children’s popular science translation. The selected translation of this translation practice is the children’s science book The Amazing Things Around Us,which was independently translated by the author and published in April 2020.The PHP Research Institute founded by Matsushita has compiled a series of encyclopedia knowledge series for children, which was introduced by Anhui Science and Technology Press and compiled and published by it.The author is responsible for the translation of The Amazing Things Around Us,which is one of the books in this series. This book mainly introduces the knowledge of the composition, characteristics, uses, manufacturing methods, identification methods and recycling of common substances. It is simple in language and wide in knowledge, and is suitable for children to read outside class.Children’s popular science is a special text style, which mainly takes the majority of children as the readers. It is necessary to convey scientific and technological knowledge to the readers in easy to understand and lively language.Children’s popular science can not only transmit knowledge, but also stimulate children’s interest in reading, and help children establish a correct world view. However,at present, the practice and theoretical research of children’s popular science translation in China are still insufficient, and there are few research results.Only Guo Jianzhong’s "science popularization and science fiction translation: theory, skill and practice"(2004)is the relevant works of science popularization translation.Children’s cognitive reading ability and thinking mode are qualitatively different from adults. When translating children’s popular science articles, special attention should be paid to children as a special group of readers. Therefore, based on the communicative translation theory put forward by Peter Newmark, this paper explores the strategies and specific methods of children’s popular science translation. The theory attaches great importance to the reading experience of the target language readers. Its purpose is to "strive to make the effect of the translation on the target language readers the same as that of the original text on the source language readers".The focus of communicative translation is to convey information according to the target language, culture and pragmatic means, rather than to copy the original faithfully as much as possible. This report mainly focuses on the translation practice of the great things around us.Through exploring the application of communicative translation theory in the translation practice,it summarizes the effective methods and the translation process of children’s popular science based on communicative translation theory, hoping that the attempt of this paper can provide some reference for the practice and theoretical research of children’s popular science translation. This report consists of three chapters. The first chapter introduces the main content and features of the book, the second chapter introduces the outline of communicative translation theory, and analyzes its applicability in this translation practice. This chapter firstly analyzes the particularity of the target readers of children’s popular science articles, and then uses Peter Newmark’s text classification theory to analyze. The third chapter analyzes how to use the theory of communicative translation to translate the great things around us through specific translation examples.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory,it analyzes in detail how to use the translation skills of addition, subtraction, reorganization and assimilation to translate children’s popular science. The final conclusions of this report are as follows: first, communicative translation theory has a strong guiding role in children’s popular science translation;second,in children’s popular science translation,it is necessary to make full use of translation skills such as addition, subtraction, reorganization and assimilation;third, children’s popular science translation has a special target audience, and children’s popular science translation should be more inclined to assimilate.
