The aim of this thesis is to study explicitation between professional and student interpreters in Chinese-English consecutive interpretation, provide a typology of explicitation and explore motivations of the phenomena. On the basis of Klaudy’s explicitation typology model, which is brought up in 1998,the author divides explicitation into two main categories, namely obligatory explicitation, and optional explicitation, and the latter is further divided into logic-based explicitation and meaning-based explicitation. The study involves 9 participants, including 6 postgraduate student interpreters who are studying in BFSU,and 3 professional interpreters. Each participant has performed a CI interpreting task and was given a short retrospective interview to explore their motivations for explicitation. The study finds out that in terms of logic-based and meaning-based explicitations, professional interpreters performed more prominently than student interpreters;in terms of the motivations of explicitation, retrospective interviews revealed that the higher the experience, the more explicitation the interpreter exhibits. The implications are as follows:The most significant difference between professional and student interpreters lies in logic-based and meaning-based explicitations.Professional interpreters are more sensitive to logic and underlying meanings. As for student interpreters, even after their graduate study for one to two years, they are still less sensitive towards logic and underlying meanings.Although schools pay attention to logic and meaning trainings, the effect of such training seems to be unsatisfactory. Therefore,it is recommended that interpreter trainers shall reflect on the current teaching methods to help students to improve their competence.
