| On 7 March 2021,a press conference was held via video link on the margins of the Fourth Session of the 13 th National People’s Congress at the Great Hall of the People.The conference lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes,and Minister Wang answered27 questions on the spot.The material analyzed in this study is Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s answer about China’s foreign policy and external relations.Based on Gile’s Effort Models,the author invited six student interpreters as subjects and collected the transcripts of two professional interpreters.On the basis of questionnaires and retrospective interviews,this study analyzed the similarities and differences of the omission between professional interpreters and student interpreters in Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting.According to the causes and effects of omission,omission strategies of interpreting can be divided into two categories: active omission and passive omission.When dealing with repetitive and secondary information,interpreters mostly adopt active omission;when interpreters have problems such as listening negligence,short-term memory,limited processing ability and unbalanced energy distribution,passive omission mostly occurs.This study finds that there is a gap between the two groups in terms of both quantity and quality.Professional interpreters hardly experience passive omission and are more skilled to take active omission appropriately than student interpreters while student interpreters have the initial awareness of active omission,but are still struggling with passive omission in practice,which is mainly caused by uncoordinated energy distribution,lack of encyclopedic knowledge and limited processing ability.Therefore,in the process of teaching and learning interpretation,emphasis should be placed on energy distribution training,encyclopedic knowledge accumulation,language ability strengthening,and interpretation theory so that student interpreters are able to become qualified professional interpreters in the future. |
