A Survey Report On Professional Qualities Of MI (English-Chinese) Student Interpreters In The Mainland Of China

In recent years,an increasing number of Master of Interpreting(MI)(English-Chinese)students serve as interpreters in the job market.The study of their professional qualities is a new academic field of interpreting research.However,there have been limited studies in this area so far.With the purpose of getting an overall knowledge of the current professional qualities of MI(English-Chinese)student interpreters in the mainland of China,the author conducted a survey.In the survey,24 universities were selected from the 101 universities and institutes with MI(English-Chinese)programs in the mainland of China by the methods of stratified sampling and random sampling on the basis of four principles.A total of 205 questionnaires were collected.Based on the data collected,the author investigated the professional qualities of MI(English-Chinese)student interpreters from the 24 universities in the following three aspects: professional abilities and skills,professional conducts and standards,and professional ethics.Meanwhile,the author also asked four questions about the interpreting programs in the universities.From the analysis of the effective data collected,the author finds that the current professional qualities of MI(English-Chinese)student interpreters in the mainland of China are relatively weak and not so satisfactory,among whom quite a few are not qualified in professional qualities.In order to reduce the negative influence on interpreting market from MI(English-Chinese)student interpreters who have weak and poor professional qualities,the author provides corresponding suggestions for five related parties: MI(English-Chinese)student interpreters,teachers of MI(English-Chinese)programs,universities with MI(English-Chinese)programs,translation companies and clients,and interpreters associations.This survey report holds the view that only through multilateral joint force and active cooperation of the parties related can the professional qualities of MI(English-Chinese)student interpreters get improved,and can the interpreting market get regulated and purified so that the development of the interpreting market can be improved in a positive way.
