The domestic academic researches in China has been more active and made great achievements in various fields with more research funding, which suggests our strong desire to improve international influence and global reputation in academia. Therefore, translating Chinese academic texts into English is becoming more and more important.Readability,as a key factor in evaluating the quality of a translation, does matter to Chinese-English translation of academic texts. However, the C-E translation of academic texts is still at its infancy in China, which can be indicated from the inadequate related research papers and the lack of guided translation strategies. The Global Cities project that the author participated in is such a C-E translation of an academic book,so it directly shows various deficiencies in dealing with ambiguous words, long sentences and complicated logical relations.A case study on the Global Cities reveals three difficulties in translating academic texts, including how to understand the hidden meaning of ambiguous words, how to clarify the complicated logical relations of Chinese run-on sentences and how to accentuate the theme with well-organized information. In order to overcome these difficulties, the author has analyzed many cases, and eventually summarized strategies from three aspects.Firstly in the aspect of word, the meaning of some ambiguous words can be inferred from related terms, and the translator needs to expose the hidden meaning to the readers.Secondly when it comes to syntax, the translator should delete the repeated parts and cut the long sentences into shorter ones in consideration of the effectiveness and efficiency of information transfer.Thirdly, the translator should add necessary and appropriate connectives and arrange suitable places for theme and rheme to enhance the cohesion and coherence of paragraphs. The author sincerely hopes the thesis can be useful for improving the readability of C-E translation of academic texts.
