A Report On Internship Practice As An Editor & Translator In Online Bilingual Dictionary Compiling

With the development of the Internet and the popularization of mobile phones,online bilingual dictionaries are frequently and widely used.At present,the online bilingual dictionary has become one of the indispensable learning tools for English learners.That requests online bilingual dictionary compilers must pay great attention to the quality of their work.This report introduces the author's internship practice as an editor & translator in NetEase Youdao Dictionary.From July to November 2019,the author participated in a project of Youdao Dictionary for high school students and was responsible for the selection,edition,and translation of sentence examples in the Writing Section of the project.In this report,the author mainly discusses translation quality and text quality of sentence examples in the online bilingual dictionary.During the internship,the author found that the language style of translated contents varied because translators in one project lacked understanding of translation principles of sentence examples and didn't realize differences between sentence examples translation and literary translation.And the main factor affecting text quality was that translators ignored the fact that text quality was also a decisive factor in quality assurance to the finished translation.At present,in the process of cultivating translators,translation ability is attached more importance while professionalism is ignored.However,a real translation job not only requires translators to have a strong translation ability,but also the awareness and ability of quality management and quality improvement of translation services.The author hopes that this report can help translation majors who are interested in dictionary translation to know more about this job and appeal to them to attach importance not only to translation quality but also to text quality.
