Tourism is not only a sunrise industry,but also an important economic mainstay of China.With the development of China’s economy and the improvement of its overall strength,China started to be better known in the international community,attracting an increasing number of foreign tourists to visit for her unique history and culture.The Red Flag Canal,located in Linzhou City,Henan Province,is a national5 A tourist attraction and also an important red tourism base in China.Welcome to the Red Flag Canal gives a comprehensive and detailed introduction to the construction process of the Red Flag Canal and the basic facts of its scenic spots.However,there has not been any relevant English translation,which greatly hinders the spread of its culture,and also affects overseas tourists’ understanding of its tourism scenic spots.In order to help more foreign friends have a profounder understanding of the Red Flag Canal,this report takes the English version of “Welcome to the Red Flag Canal”as an example to figure out suitable English translation strategies for Chinese texts in cultural tourism.In this translation practice,the source language is rich in vocabulary and prominent in cultural characteristics,involving local history,folk customs,legends,etc.The author obtains information related to the source text by consulting relevant literature and watching documentaries,so as to assist this translation practice.In addition,the author makes a specific classification for different translation practice.At the lexical level,the translator uses literal and liberal translation approach to translate different types of culture-loaded words and converts the four-character phrases in the original text into English adjectives and nouns.At the syntactic level,the translator transforms long and difficult sentences by adjusting the structural order and merging the effective information while translating.This paper takes full account of lingual distinctions between Chinese and English and employs adequate examples to prove the practicality of the translation.Through this translation practice,the author realizes that translation should not only be faithful to the original text,but also take into account the transmission of cultural information.Finally,the author hopes this translation practice will contribute to the publicity of the Red Flag Canal,and will be regarded as a reference for future workers engaged in tourist translation.
