Report On The C-E Translation Of Commentary For Audio Guides To The Former Residence Of Yang Shangkun

This paper reports on the problems encountered in the translation practice of the Commentary for Audio Guides to the Former Residence of Yang Shangkun,such as large amount of information,many cultural elements and multiple sentence structures,which have been analyzed based on Reiss' text type theory from three translation dimensions: informative text,expressive text and operative text.Some translation methods or techniques are proposed for solving these problems,translation methods such as transliteration-annotation/explanation,literal translation-explanation,literal translation-conversion,literal translation-addition,literal translation,borrowing,adaptation,imitation,translation techniques such as division,collaboration,omission,omission-paraphrase,lexical conversion,sentence pattern-conversion,conversion-annotation.Entrusted by Yang Shangkun's Former Residence Management Department in Tongnan District of Chongqing,the author undertook the English translation task of the Commentary for Audio Guides to the Former Residence of Yang Shangkun according to their translation requirements.The Management Department expects to attract foreign visitors,disseminate Chinese revolutionary culture and promote the Chinese revolutionary spirit with the help of English version of the commentary.The Former Residence of Yang Shangkun is a revolutionary tourist attraction with Chinese characteristics,cultural learnability,heroic deeds' vitality,and historical authenticity.But in many English translations of revolutionary tourist attractions,there exist problems of language distortion,intention dislocation and different versions,such as spelling and grammatical errors,and even no corresponding English translations in some tourist attractions.Thus,this report,taking that translation task as an example,analyzes the textual characteristics of the revolutionary tourist attractions,discusses three text type problems met in the process of translating,and explores the corresponding translation methods or techniques.And then it puts forward the proposal to improve the quality of revolutionary tourist translation at four levels--establishing multilingual language corpus,cultivating professional translators of revolutionary tourist attractions,realizing receiver-oriented cross-cultural communication and acceptance,and studying revolutionary tourism text translation in multiple dimensions,so as to provides reference value.There are 4 chapters in the report.The first chapter is the task description,including the introduction to the source and background of translation task,the content and analysis of the source text,and the purpose and significance of the translation.The second chapter is the process description,about(1)pre-translation preparations: making a plan for the task of translation,preparing translation aids and glossary,formulating translation quality monitoring plan,reading the source text,searching relevant literature and translation theory;(2)translation schedule: implementation of translation plans,translation mentality adjustments;and(3)post-translation quality control,such as translation quality review and monitoring;The third chapter is the case study which is the core content of the report.Under the guidance of Reiss' translation theory on text types,it analyzes the three major translation problems of informative text,expressive text,and operative text,presents the theoretical thinking and provides resolution processes.According to different text types,different translation methods or techniques are used to guide this translation practice: in the translation on informative text,transliteration-annotation/explanation,paraphrase,literal translation-explanation,literal translation,division,borrowing,collaboration,adaptation are employed;in the translation on expressive text,omission,transliteration-paraphrase,literal translation,conversion,borrowing translation,imitation,omission-paraphrase are adopted;in the translation on operative text,literal translation,literal translation-addition,literal translation-conversion,lexical conversion,sentence pattern-conversion are preferred.The fourth chapter,the conclusion of the thesis,sums up the author's experiences and gains in the translation practice,the existing problems and shortcomings,and suggestions for the translation of revolutionary tourist attractions' texts.
