Character Pieces was often used to be a composing skill at 19 th century.At that time,people began to think about their own emotional side,the rise of aesthetics with an emphasis on emotion,admiring the closeness to nature,and regaining pure humanity.Robert Schumann revealed his sentiment theory in the music review also influenced the European artistic trend.Schumann’s literary materials are equal to music.Although,this musical work "Five song in folk style,Op.102" wasn’t quoted with some literature or poetry,also filled with the beauty and structure of a poetic tone.The use of materials,combined with the character conversion of Schumann,was produced some dramatic tension.The words of national style,was simple but with great emotional fluctuations.The title of folk song style was the desire for pure humanity and a reflection of the national feelings shown of the war years,1849."Five song in folk style" composed with five character pieces,each of piece had musical terms marked by Schumann.This paper will use Textual Analysis as the research method.To analyze the structure and motivational material of the work and the characters hidden in the music,with the manuscript of Schumann as an evidence.Compare the recording versions further to more possibilities of interpretation and performance techniques.This dissertation will be divided into introduction,three chapters and conclusion.The first chapter is an overview of Schumann’s life and works which tells his life briefly and common composition.The introduction of this work combined with Schumann’s inner emotions and the background of this piece,also the meaning of the title added by Schumann.The second chapter is the analysis of the work through the analysis of score.The third chapter discusses the performance of the music.After comparing the recordings,explore more ideas of performance,based on the view of Schumann.On the other hand,the cooperation of piano performer provide diversity of playing.In a nutshell,this piece is not a difficult piece for an audience and there are not many knot sections for cello.However,after analysis,the work covered with many short phrases.As a cello player,need to switch the craftsmanship frequently.The construction of this piece wasn’t a complicated one but brimming with some deep sentiment.This inspired the author simplicity and profoundness.As the increasing of gradation,sometimes it’s difficult to resort back to the original of performance.Emotions and performance need to be structured on the rigorous arrangement,with a clear technique.Despite how normal a staccato,it can be created by multi-ways and sounds.That’s what Schumann want reveal the humor and poetic music with strictness.
