Throughout the different versions of English textbooks in primary schools,songs have become more and more important as an important textbook resource.Obviously,songs,especially English children’s songs,have a bright rhythm,simple melody and easy-to-understand lyrics,which are very popular among students.The textbooks with songs are not only attractive and in line with the psychological characteristics and cognition of primary school students,but also represent the direction of textbook reform.However,in the teaching process,the actual development of song teaching is not satisfactory.This research first analyzes the textbooks of primary school English textbooks from the third to sixth grade(8 volumes)in the Shanghai Education Edition(from the third grade).By sorting out the requirements of the curriculum standards on the teaching of English songs and teaching concepts,the author summarizes the basis of English song teaching in primary schools.Following the basic concept,the author analyzes the current situation,existing problems and reasons of the English songs teaching from the four perspectives of understanding,design,implementation and evaluation of songs teaching.through observation method,text analysis method and interview method.In order to improve English teaching,it is recommended that songs teaching plays an important role in English teaching activities.The study founds that the problems in primary school English songs teaching exists in the four aspects.Firstly,from the understanding aspect: teachers’ understanding of the role of song teaching is not deep,and the standards of understanding is biased.Secondly,from the design aspect: A single goal of songs teaching is not enough.Songs teaching lacks the whole design.The individual differences of the students are ignored.The analysis of teaching materials is insufficient.Thirdly,from the implementation aspect: In teaching process,it is lack of effective teaching strategies.The teacher’s professional quality does not meet the standards.The teaching resources are wide but inaccurate.Fourthly,from the evaluation aspect: The evaluation subject is single and the final evaluation is missing.The reasons are as follows: Firstly,from the understanding aspect: Teachers need enough theoretical study.Secondly,from the design aspect: Roles and teaching objectives of Songs teaching is not clear.The students’ needs are ignored.The analysis of teaching materials is not sufficient.Thirdly,from the implementation aspect:The analysis of the teaching content is in-depth.Teachers ignore other literacy other than English professional knowledge literacy.Sharing platform is not proper.Fourthly,from the evaluation aspect: Evaluation cases in the new curriculum standards is missing and the students’ dominant position is neglected.The author gives suggestions in the four aspects.Firstly,from the understanding aspect: Strengthen education and training to teachers.Focus on interpretation and implementation of curriculum standards.Secondly,from the design aspect: The analysis of goals of English songs teaching should be detailed.Emphasize the overall grasp of the goals of English song teaching.Pay attention to Students’ individual differences.Provide a comprehensive analysis of songs teaching content.Thirdly,from the implementation aspect: Teaching strategies should be applied flexibly.Teachers develop overall qualities.Use the platform to share resources.Fourthly,from the evaluation aspect: The evaluation should be dominated by students themselves,taking others’ evaluation into account.Make good use of the "baton" of the exam.
