| This is an English-Chinese translation report.The source text of the translation practice is Culture and Conquest in Mongol Eurasia(Chapter 12)written by Thomas T.Allsen,an American historian.The source text mainly tells us many types of cultural exchanges between the Il-qans and the Yuan Dynasty in the 13 th century and the transfer of different cultures across Eurasia.Chapter 12 of the source text presents the exchange of historiography between Iran and China.In the process of translating,the translator encountered many difficulties.At the lexical level,there are plenty of proper nouns and polysemous nouns.Some proper nouns,such as names of people,official titles and institutions,can not be found the corresponding Chinese equivalents in dictionaries or the existing literature.Meanwhile,the meanings of some polysemous words should be selected and extended in the translation,according to the historical background of the source text.At the syntactic level,the difficulty concentrates on translating the sentences with appositives and the long sentences with more than 20 words.In the translation practice,the translator adopted many translation techniques flexibly.At the lexical level,transliteration and annotation were used to translate proper nouns.Besides,the translator resorted to the techniques of selection and extension of the meanings of words in translating polysemous nouns.At the syntactic level,when coping with the sentences with appositives,the translator used the techniques of sequential translation,reverse translation and amplification;when handling the long sentences,the translator chose the techniques of division,conversion and recasting in order to achieve fidelity,coherence and naturalness of the translation. |
