On The Translation Methods And Procedures Of English Bestsellers From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Strategy

Recent years have witnessed an increasing interest in reading English popular fiction, and their Chinese translations. The source text under discussion in this thesis is excerpted from The Best of Me written in2011by contemporary popular American writer Nicholas Sparks, who is famous for the popular novel---The Notebook. This book is the only book of Nicholas Sparks that has not been translated into Chinese. The theme of the book is revealed at the end of the novel. It is a good novel that is worth translating into Chinese.This thesis consists of five parts. The first part is an introduction of the background, purpose and significance of the study. The second part gives a brief account of the source language in English popular fiction and this novel respectively, and points out the elements which should be noticed in translating, the problems and challenges which may occur. The Third part discusses related translation theories and thus concludes that Newmark’s communicative translating theory and text category theory are applicable in the translation of popular fiction. Examples of different versions are juxtaposed to show its different effects. In the fourth part, specific examples are provided to demonstrate various translation strategies and procedures. The final part is the conclusion.In the thesis an analysis is made from both theoretical and practical perspectives about the common features of popular novels as well as those of the one under discussion. It succeeds in confirming the usefulness of the basic principles of translation for popular fiction proposed by Newmark.
