Chopin's ballades are regarded as the pioneering work of instrumental music genre in the romantic period.Due to the lack of academic translations of literatures on Chopin's Ballades in China, the author, under the guidance of her tutor, translated the monograph Chopin: The Four Ballades written by Jim Samson, who is a well-known British musicologist. This book is well received in the British and American academic circles, and its introduction has a very high reference value for China. The author organizes her thesis with three aspects: pre-translation preparation, close reading of the original work and translation strategies. After introducing Jim Samson's academic status, research frontier at home and abroad and relevant comments, the author further studied the core concepts, including sheet music version, reception history, cycles of genre and apotheosis from the perspective of Chinese translator.Meanwhile,to solve the problems encountered in translation process, practical translation strategies are put forward in terms of pre-translation preparation, literature retrieval, terminology translation, understanding and translation of long and difficult sentences.
