There are many culture-loaded words in martial arts novels which form an important part of Chinese literature. With the background of Chinese culture going abroad, the spread of Chinese culture is closely related to the translation of culture-loaded words.Under the direction of Skopostheorie, this thesis studies the translation in Legends of the Condor Heroes,in the hope of making some supplements to translation studies of martial arts novels and the introduction of Chinese culture. In this thesis, the translation strategies of culture-loaded words are counted and recorded.Examples from different kinds of culture-loaded words are picked to study translation strategies of culture-loaded words and roles of translators. The results of the study are as follows.First,in the translation of culture-loaded words, the use of literal translation ranks the highest, accounting for 60.2%;literal translation preserves most contents of culture but meanwhile,it increases the difficulty in reading for target readers.Second, the use of free translation ranks second, about 23.1%;free translation makes target readers know and understand contents more easily and helps them construct the frame of contexts.Third, the translator adopts literal translation with free translation as the complementary strategy,in order to balance the introduction of Chinese culture and readable texts;besides the application of literal translation and free translation, the translator adopts other translation strategies as well, such as amplification, omission, transliteration, and annotation. Moreover, different translation strategies are combined for the same purpose. When all annotations of culture-loaded words cannot be presented at the same time, the translator gives up some cultural information to keep the contexts readable and coherent.Fourth, the translator plays the roles of learner and disseminator of culture;although the translator's initiatives are influenced by the translation purpose, they are kept in a way in specific contexts in which the translator can choose applicable translation strategies without spoiling the translation purpose.
