This paper explores the translation strategies of culture-loaded expressions in Anna Holmwood's translation of Legends of the Condor Heroes from schema theory.Schema is important in understanding culture-loaded expressions.Only when readers have the shared knowledge of a culture-loaded expression in mind, can they know its meaning clearly. However,in cross-cultural communication, target readers lack the shared knowledge of Chinese cultural elements. Therefore, the translator needs to decode the source text schema, and then encodes it in the target text,so that the schema can be delivered to target readers to facilitate their understanding. In this English version of Legends of the Condor Heroes, the translator introduces the Chinese martial arts novel to English readers, and builds the schema of Jin Yong's novel. Therefore, the schemas of many Chinese culture-loaded expressions are preserved.Meanwhile, the translator also tries to improve the readability of the English version. In this paper, the translation of culture-loaded expressions is discussed in the relationships between the schema of the source text and the schema of the translated text: schema vacancy, schema correspondence and schema overlap.Through the analysis, the author summarizes Anna's translation strategies to introduce source text schema and the strategies to enhance readability. To preserve the source text schema, the translator constructs new schema in the target language through transliteration, transliteration with explanation, literal translation and literal translation with explanation. To make the text more readable, first, the translator finds the equivalent English schema through literal translation.Second, she explains the source text schema through paraphrase.Third, the translator also adjusts the source text schema through borrowing, amplification and abridgement.Hopefully this research could be conducive to the translation of culture-loaded expressions in martial arts novels.
