The Legends of the Condor Heroes I–A Hero Born,the English translation of She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan by Anna Holmwood,once released,has started to gain popularity among readers thanks to its intense plots and heroic wuxia world.Jin Yong is known as the trailblazer and master of Chinese martial arts novels,and his works are praised as the treasure trove of Chinese culture.Therefore,the translation of his works will definitely help the spread of Chinese culture.The translation of Chinese classics has never been easy,and the extensive and rich Chinese cultural elements in She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan have undoubtedly added to the difficulty of its translating.Nevertheless,Anna Holmwood's translation has basically conveyed the essence of the original work,setting an example.As a leading figure in the school of cultural translation,Susan Bassnett advocates cultural function equivalence in her cultural translation theory.She believes that the basic unit of translation should be cultural factors with language as the core.The purpose of translation is to achieve cultural transformation.In this regard,the translator can break the shackles of language form and rewrite the original text to achieve the equivalence between the function of the target language in the target language and that of the original language in the source language.The author finds that cultural translation theory is mostly used to analyze the translation of classic literary works,but it has not been used to study the English translation of She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan.Given the above facts and guided by Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory,the thesis explores how the translator achieves the goal of cultural functional equivalence by adopting the translation strategy of rewriting.At macro level,the techniques of addition,adaptation and omission are applied to paratexts,dialogues and culture-related contents.As for culture-loaded words such as names,pseudonyms,kung fu and other cultural elements,the author finds that Anna Holmwood mainly introduces the technique of foreignization to retain the original flavor of She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan.The huge success of A Hero Born in the author's opinion will shed light on the translation and introduction of Chinese martial arts novels and classic literature.
