Zhong Yao became known as “the father of regular script”,since he was its creator.Since the late period of Jin Dynasty,he has been called “the four sages” with Zhang Zhi,Wang Xian and his father.In addition,he was also named as “Zhong Wang” with Wang Xizhi in this period.In the history of Chinese calligraphy,he was even praised as “No one can surpass him with outstanding achievements since Qin and Han Dynasties.”,which showed us how unique his calligraphy style was and how outstanding his achievements was.All in all,his calligraphy style has earned a high place,leading him to enjoy an lofty honor.However,compared with the calligraphy of Wang Xizhi,there were few people who knew and studied the calligraphy of Zhong Yao,because his calligraphic works spread in an extremely limited range and his works were hard for ordinary people to appreciate.This thesis mainly comprehensively makes a conclusion and arrangement on the formation of the calligraphy of Zhong Yao,his achievements and artistic characteristics in calligraphy,aesthetics thought and the influence of his calligraphy to his generation,to rise people's attention to Zhong Yao and his calligraphy.It mainly contains four parts.The fist chapter explains social background,calligraphy developing background,philology background and his personal elements in formation of his style and features of regular script in small characters.The second chapter makes a conclusion that the calligraphy style of Zhong Yao is classic as well as elegant,natural and thick by wholly analyzing,studying and summarizing it.The third chapter focuses on the influence of Zhong Xiaoxiao's regular script in small characters to regular script calligraphers of later generations,respectively studying the development of regular script in small characters and the representative calligraphers from Wei-Jin to Ming-Qing Dynasties,and discuses the influence of Zhong Xiaoxiao's regular script in small characters to later generations in details.In the last part,I,with my own knowledge and creation experiences,focus on the creative and applied aspects of Zhong Xiaoxiao's regular script in small characters on the basis of previous studies.
