Solid waste is the main type of environmental pollution, which has exerted a profound influence on people's health.Solid waste management has always been and will continue to be one of the important issues in environment protection.Solid Waste Management,a book written by CalRecovery, expounds ways of solid waste management in Africa,Asia,Europe,Latin America and the Caribbean and North America, which has offered profound insight into solid waste management. And in order to help readers in our country know about solid waste management abroad, the translator sets out to translate part of this book.Solid Waste Management,a book classified as the scientific text, contains many complex theme-rheme structures in need of preciseness and logicality. The translator chooses Chapter Four and Chapter Five as the source text of the report, which gives an introduction to the solid waste management in Latin America and Caribbean respectively. Therefore, this report mainly discusses translation strategies for theme-rheme structures guided by Functional Grammar Theory. The report is divided into six chapters.Chapter One briefly introduces the research background.Chapter Two gives a brief introduction to the characteristics of the source text and the translation requirements.Chapter Three describes translation process, which consists of pre-task work,while-task work and post-task work.In Chapter Four, the translator introduces Halliday's theme-rheme structure in An Introduction to Functional Grammar, including types of theme, unremarked theme, marked theme and patterns of thematic progression.Chapter Five proposes strategies for the translation of themes(i.e.retention,omission,amplification and cutting),rhemes(cutting and fronting),and theme-rhemes(recasting and revising). It probes into the strategies based on patterns of thematic progression as well, including substitution and clarification.Chapter Six points out the problems and limitations in this translation.
