Nowadays, the climate problems have aroused more and more public concern. In view of the fact that the Arctic system is an important part of the whole climate system and is more vulnerable to damage, meteorologists think it necessary to raise people's awareness of protection and take measures to reduce the damage to the Arctic. As an important book of Cambridge Atmospheric and Space Science Series,The Arctic Climate System by Mark C.Serreze and Roger G.Barry probes into such issues as “evolution of the climate”,“atmosphere circulation”,“recent climate variability and trends” of the Arctic, etc.,which has offered more insight into “the Arctic climate system”.And in order to help readers in our country know about the unique environment and climate system of the Arctic, the latest achievement abroad in the Arctic climate system and enhance people's awareness of protecting the Arctic environment, the translator sets about translating part of this book.Chapter Two of The Arctic Climate System is selected as the original text, which describes the physical characteristics and basic climate features of the Arctic. The original text is classified as the scientific text,in which many parentheses are contained. As one of the important language features in English, parentheses often violate sentence coherence, and therefore it is essential to study the translation strategies for parentheses. In terms of their function, parentheses can be classified into parentheses for additional remarks, cohesive parentheses and modifying parentheses.Under the guidance of Skopos theory, the translator adopts amplification, converting, synchronizing, word order adjustment, fronting and division to solve the translation of parentheses. This report is expected to provide some reference for the translation of parentheses. This translation report is composed of six chapters.Chapter One is the introduction.Chapter Two is the task description, which mainly introduces The Arctic Climate System and task requirements.Chapter Three describes the procedures oftranslation, including the preparation before translation, translation process and proofreading after translation.Chapter Four is the introduction to the Skopos theory and parentheses.Chapter Five is the case study,in which some translation methods and strategies for parentheses are presented. The last chapter summarizes the translation report.
