A Report On E-C Translation Of Parentheses Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

With the continuous development of linguistic science,the research perspective and level of parenthesis is more and more wide.Throughout the history of English parentheses,studies on parenthesis mostly focus on grammatical forms,then semantic and pragmatic function.In recent years,the translation of parentheses has drawn public attention.According to the literature available,however,the discussion of parenthesis translation methods is not sufficient and few scholars researched it under the guidance of translation theory.As one of the important features in English,parentheses always interrupt the continuity of both sentences and their meanings,and thus may cause great difficulties to translators.Therefore,the study of methods of translating parentheses is of great value.This translation report is the practice translation of Shirley Jackson's A Rather Haunted Life based on Skopos Theory.This book belongs to the category between informative and expressive text,in which information is compact,and sentences have complicated structures,especially sentences with parentheses.Plenty of parentheses have caused difficulties in comprehension and translation to the researcher.In view of this,this thesis is written to systematically explore parentheses translation on the basis of Skopos Theory and attempts to address the following the question: the methods used to translate different categories of parentheses according to the translation purpose and the intra-textual coherence rule and fidelity rule.In the specific implementation of the research,this thesis first defines theparentheses.Then according to the functions of parentheses,the researcher divides them into four categories:parentheses for additional remarks,modifying parentheses,progressive parentheses and enumerative parentheses.For the parentheses for additional remarks,the researcher uses amplification,advanced placement method or linear translation.For the shorter modifying parentheses,the researcher takes the advanced placement method according to the Chinese language habit;for the longer modifying parentheses,the researcher takes the method of word order adjustment and amplification.For progressive parentheses,the researcher takes the method of word order adjustment and amplification,adding emphatic Chinese words like“??”to achieve the function of emphasis or the progressive relationship in the source language.For enumerative parentheses,the researcher takes the method of amplification and post-position,adding Chinese enumerative words like“??”to reappear the function of enumeration.The research result of this thesis has provided a certain reference value for the study and the practice of parentheses translation.
