Nowadays,with the development of economy and politics,more and more people realize the importance of English,and pay more attention to English learning.Reading as one of the four necessary skills of English plays an essential role in English learning.In primary school,reading is also a vital way for students to acquire knowledge,accumulate vocabulary,be familiar with sentence patterns,and cultivate written expression ability.According to the normal teaching method,teachers always focus on teaching vocabulary and grammar,seldom give guidance on students' reading strategies or communicate with students in class.As a result,students lack the overall grasp and understanding of the passage.Gradually,students lose their interest and enthusiasm in English reading.Since facing this kind of problem to solve,the study applies graphic organizer to English reading teaching in primary school.Graphic organizer is a pedagogical tool that uses visual symbols to express knowledge,concepts,thoughts,or ideas,and the relationships between them.Graphic organizer will transfer students' invisible inner activities into the visible and promote students to understand the reading texts.The study tries to solve two questions: What is the effect of the application of graphic organizer on primary school students' reading competence? What is the change of the students' interest in English learning after the application of graphic organizer?In order to answer these two research questions,the study lasts for three months.A total of 81 students from two parallel classes in Grade Six in a private school in Shenyang participate in this study.Graphic organizer is adopted in the experimental class(EC),while the normal reading teaching method is used in the control class(CC).In the whole study,test,questionnaire,observation and interview are used as methodology.When all the data are collected and analyzed after the experiment,it shows that the reading competence of students in the EC is superior to that of the students in the CC.Moreover,the reading attitude and interest of the students in the EC also change significantly.The results of the study show that:(1)the teaching method of graphic organizer is conducive to improving students' English reading competence;(2)the teaching method of graphic organizer helps to change students' reading attitude and improve students' interest in English reading.
