Among the basic English skills, reading is especially important. Therefore, the importance of effective English reading teaching methods is self-evident.Some teachers overemphasize on language knowledge teaching, but ignore the learning process of students’ language skills, and neglect the cultivation of student’s emotion and attitude. So the current reading teaching activity designs cannot effectively stimulate the elementary student’s reading interest, thus affecting the improvement of students’ reading abilities which causes the students’ reading ability to stay in low-order thinking, and the high-order thinking ability cannot be effectively developed.Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives(BTEO),which reveals the hierarchy of cognitive development, plays an important role in guiding teaching and promoting students’ thinking development. However, there is still a lack of practical research in guiding English reading teaching in primary schools, especially the lack of operational teaching guidance for front-line teachers. The practical research on how to use this theory to guide teachers to carry out reading teaching activities in a scientific and hierarchical way is beneficial to stimulate students’ reading interest and improve their reading ability. This study attempts to answer the following three questions:(1)Can the teaching designs based on BTEO help to improve students’ interest in reading?(2)Can the teaching designs based on BTEO help to improve students’ reading ability? If so,which aspect of reading abilities has the most significant improvement?(3)Is there any difference in the reading ability of students with different levels(high, middle and low)when BTEO is applied? If so,which level of students is greatly affected? The research objects selected are students in two parallel classes of Grade 5 in Primary School Attached to Anhui Normal University in Wuhu,Anhui Province, one of which is the experimental class and the other is the control class. In the experimental class, reading teaching activities under the guidance of BTEO were adopted, while in the control class, conventional reading teaching methods were used. After nearly four months’ experiment, through collecting and analyzing the data from the questionnaires, tests and an interview before and after the experiment by SPSS20.0 and Excel, the researcher finds that:(1)The teaching designs based on BTEO can effectively stimulate students’interest in reading.(2)The teaching designs based on BTEO can promote students’ English reading ability significantly.Especially, the ability of inference and judgment has got the most significant improvement.(3)There is significant difference in the reading ability of students with different levels. The middle-level students, particularly, are greatly affected by BTEO,and then followed by low-level and high-level students.Based on the above research results, corresponding educational implications are put forward for the application of BTEO in primary school reading teaching. In addition, this paper also points out the limitations and some suggestions for future research.
