The thesis is a report on the Chines-English translation of a short story Beloved Potatoes written by Chi Zijian,one of the most famous figures in Chinese contemporary literary world.The story describes a true love between a wife and her dying husband who had cancer,and their deep emotions for the potatoes in their hometown.In the process of literary translation,how to convey the cultural images embodied in the source text to the target reader may be the biggest challenge for the translator.Under the guidance of Veneer's Skopos Theory,the author discusses how to choose appropriate methods to translate culture-loaded expressions and how to translate the story properly and soundly so as to make the translation complying to the three criteria: Skopos Rule,Coherence Rule and Fidelity Rule.The author hopes that target reader could have a better understanding of Chinese culture and Chinese literature works,and the report could hopefully give an idea about the strategies in literary translation,the points of strength and weakness in the author's translation,and the difficulties a translator of such texts is likely to face.The report consists of five chapters.The first chapter is an introduction to background and significance of the translation project as well as the structure of the report.The second chapter is the preparation work,namely,a brief review of the source text.The third chapter is an introduction of the guiding theory: Skopos Theory.The chapter four is the core of this report.The author concentrates on the analysis of case studies from the perspective of Skopos Theory.The last chapter summarizes some experience gained from the translation and difficulties of the report in the process of translation. |
